Our job in our journeys to be a Care Bear. We find the parts of that need love, and shine light right out of our hearts, until those parts have all they need. We realize we’ve got an inexhaustible supply, and the quality of the love improves the more we give away.

Peeling off the Scales and Revealing Ordinary Beauty

We use the metaphor of feeding our demons a lot here in our teachings and circles. We’ve found that fighting the unlovely parts of ourselves that sometimes rear their heads in our journeys is counter productive. Instead, engaging with kind, loving attention and nurturing these parts creates a level of wholeness that we might not have thought possible.

I might be dating myself, but I think of our job in our journeys to be a Care Bear. We find the parts of that need love, and we squinch up our foreheads, take the deepest of breaths, and shine that light right out of our hearts, until those parts have all they need. We realize we’ve got an inexhaustible supply, and the quality of the love improves the more we give away. Miraculous.

Of course, there are variations on a theme, and sometimes feeding isn’t exactly the metaphor we’re looking for. Sometimes, we experience an excruciating purification. A part of ourselves we’ve been so deeply identified with gets ripped away starts to get ripped away, and it freaking hurts. Sometimes, it feels like we’re the one who is called to do the ripping. It’s an act of faith, we might worry we’re going to cause ourselves permanent damage. We might die, or be maimed, or go insane. And yet sometimes we go through with it. Like the story below says, we’re rewarded with ordinary beauty and radiant contentment. And reward isn’t really even the best word, because they were there all along. The truth of who we are is revealed, and it’s ordinary and beautiful and radiant and content.

We can use whatever metaphor works. Language is wonderful because it reveals how our minds work. Part of the practice is recognizing how we make meaning and how we interpret reality. A great story, like the one below, is great because it describes a reality that is so common for so many of us. A truth that is ordinary and beautiful. Enjoy.
