Thought into Form: Manifesting Your Vision
A Painting Workshop with Mark Henson
Come join us for a day of creative expression!
In this workshop we will explore ways to develop our thoughts, ideas and emotions into powerful themes and concepts suitable for expression in visual form. We’ll see some time-honored methods for rendering your imaginings and feelings into works of art. We’ll discuss techniques of image construction, and then we will up work up our ideas as preliminary sketches for painting, and go on create a small painting using acrylic paints.
We will discuss theories of form and composition, and armature, the hidden structure of a painting. I will show you how basic perspective works to add depth to your image, and the use of foreshortening. We will learn about light and shadow, use of color, and the use of symbols and icons to create clear and powerful images. Mark will Show-and-Tell a bit about Painting as Narrative- the use of storytelling, psychology and symbolism to create a meaningful work of art, using examples from both history and Mark’s own body of work.
We’ll work up our themes from quick thumbnail sketches up to a line drawing ready to transfer to the canvas or panel. Mark will demonstrate preparing a panel and methods for transferring our drawings to the panel. While we are waiting for the panels to dry, he will discuss underpainting, color theory and color application and glazing. He will demonstrate how to quickly create the feeling of depth using shading and complimentary colors.
We will spend the remainder of the time working on our paintings, and at the end of the day we will share our work and talk about ways to continue to expand our visions.
